Why/how did you choose a career in radio?
I actually wanted to be a high school choral teacher (my inspiration was Mr. Richard Berberian of Barnstable High School in the late ‘70s) and went to college to become one, but I was hit by the broadcasting bug earlier. Two of my radio idols were Jon Wetterlow (former voice of the Cape Cod Cubs hockey team – remember them?) and Dave Read (current weather forecaster at Cape Cod Broadcasting). I loved listening to those guys and dreamed of doing the jobs they did. I had the privilege to work with both Jon and Dave in the early ‘90s at WQRC, and I learned a lot about radio from both of them.
WFCC was my first professional radio job back in 1988. Prior to that, I did radio in college, playing everything from classical to alternative music. How did this parlay into a professional career? I sang in a concert with the Chatham Chorale in 1987, and I was introduced to Janice Gray, program director of the then-brand new WFCC, after the performance. She had heard my speaking voice and we struck up a conversation. She asked me if I knew about classical music and would I be a part-time announcer for WFCC. I said, "Heck, yes – I need the money!" It has become my love and passion (and, yes, career) for 21 years. Thank you, Janice, for believing in me.
What do you like best about your job?
For me, it’s all about the classics. This music was the "pop" music of its day, and it has withstood the test of time. The greatness of this music, in all its beauty, strength, and emotion, never ceases to amaze me. I am privileged and honored to bring this music to Cape Cod audiences on WFCC each and every morning.
What things do you like about Cape Cod?
How much room do I have on this web page? Main Street, Hyannis; Main Street, Falmouth; the Melody Tent; Craigville Beach; Nobska Lighthouse, Woods Hole; Four Seas Ice Cream; Marconi Beach (appropriate for a radio guy, eh na?); Cape Cod Rail Trail; Pilgrim Monument; Cape Cod Potato Chips; Cape Bowl, Hyannis; any of the Cape’s mini-golf courses; Sandy Neck Beach; Sam Diego’s Restaurant. I could go on and on.
What things do you miss about Cape Cod?
Drive-in theatres; Signor Pizza; the Center Theater in Hyannis’ East End (burned down in 1972); the Hyannis Theatre in the West End (became a small indoor mall); the Falmouth Playhouse; the Sagamore Rotary (OK, I really don’t miss THAT); Grant’s and Zayre’s department stores; Howard Johnson’s; the original Mashpee cinemas; DeFazio’s Pizzeria in Mashpee; the Cape Cod Coliseum. Here, too, I could go on and on, but I won’t.
What are some of your favorite activities?
I enjoy singing, reading, surfing the Web, dining at restaurants, and just hanging out with family and friends. I also love being part of a special ministry called Faith Alive. I travel to many churches throughout the country that choose to have a Faith Alive weekend and share how God is working in my life.
When not at work, where would you be most likely found?
You’d find me rehearsing at chorus concerts, driving the highways and byways of this great country, walking the shoreline or nature trails, or out on the patio with my family, grilling burgers and bratwursts.
Favorite movies: (all of them); the Back to the Future trilogy; U.S. Marshals; Shine; all the Indiana Jones flicks; The Blues Brothers; all the Rocky movies; Air Force One.
Words of wisdom:
God, family, friends . . . in that order.
